We aim for civic configurations of urban place. Identifying citizens’ routines and their perception of local environments allows us to design communal urban environments that balance public with private interests of space and activation.
To that end, we have developed an urban profiling toolchain called CIVITAS. The profile of a user or group such as a company or social group serves as search objectives to virtually scout the city for neighbourhoods, blocks and buildings that match the user profile best. User profiles are generated through research and client workshops with SUPERSPACE. Urban profiles are built from a combination of open and proprietary data as well as data on spatial, social and other metrics that we generate through our bespoke spatial analysis and Urban Archive.
CIVITAS enables place matching to allow clients to identify locations that offer an effective synergy between their operations and a neighborhood’s character. We can simulate densification levels with expected provision for land-uses and communal services, informing strategic briefing for development quantums and urban form.
The CIVITAS toolchain contains 3 levels of analysis from whole city to urban blocks, buildings and even floors. Across the scales we quantify categories of spatial qualities and performances: spatial character, connectivity and densities. Each place in the city is given a profile that can be used to establish development briefs, search real-estate, evaluate amenity provisions and assessing masterplans.
To speed up the data profiling of cities around the world, we have developed an automatic data harvesting and metric generation system called Urban Archive. The archive collects, stores and visualizes all urban data from open source to generated spatial metrics in order to be able to query the database for global pattern and to conduct context analysis for masterplans and urban strategies.
We use the CIVITAS toolchain for strategic planning for government and developers, data-driven masterplanning, place making, as well as real-estate consultation.
